3 What is a masthead? The name of the newspaper found at the top of the front page List 3 presentational devices found on tabloid front covers Large font, upper case headline, sub-headline, photograph leads the story, white on black for contrast, caption, cross head, advertisements, flash, text in columns

4 What is the purpose of newspapers and magazines?
To inform and entertain, to influence opinion List 3 text-types found in newspapers? E.g. balanced editorial Advertisements, opinion columns, gossip columns, letters to the editor, news reports, sports reports, interviews, features, reviews (e.g restaurants, plays) , factual reports, specialist pages (e.g fashion, motoring)

5 List three persuasive devices found in media and non-fiction texts
Alliteration, repetition, rule of three, emotive language, dare to disagree, rhetorical question, use of collective pronouns (we, us) and 2nd person (you) List 3 tabloid language features short punchy words, emotive words, idioms (well known phrases or sayings e.g. she hit the roof), wordplay and puns, nick-names, alliteration, rhyme, onomatopoeia (when words sound like the noise they describe)

6 You are the editor of a tabloid and have just received this press release from Number 10, Downing Street ‘The Prime Minister has taken the decision to resign from public office. Following recent allegations of bribery and corruption he feels that his position as leader of the Labour Party and Britain is no longer tenable until the matter has been fully investigated.’ Write the opening paragraph, headline and sub-headline You must attract the reader’s attention Tempt them to read on Use tabloid language Set the scene by answering key questions (who? what? when? where? why? ) Plan in rough first at the back of your book
