Figure 1 Causes of death in dialysis patients 2011 to 2013, including missing/unknown causes. This alternate pie chart differs from the analysis provided in the original 2015 US Renal Data System Annual Data Report3 (see Fig 1A of Herzog et al1 for a rendering), in which the denominator included other causes of death and excluded missing/unknown causes of death (23.5% of patients had unknown or missing causes of death). Alternate pie chart based on special analyses using Reference Table H12 related to Fig 9.1 [volume 2] of Saran et al.3 “Unknown causes” includes records from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services 2746 end-stage renal disease (ESRD) death notification form that specifically designate an “unknown” cause of death. “Missing” includes records in the ESRD database that are missing form 2746 or have the form but are missing or have recording errors in the primary cause of death field. The denominator of this alternate pie chart includes other known causes, unknown causes of death, and records that are missing the cause of death. Abbreviations: AHD, atherosclerotic heart disease; AMI, acute myocardial infarction; CHF, congestive heart failure; CVA, cerebrovascular accident.
