1 ENGINEERING YOUR FUTURE 5 PP1: Focus on the future

2 PP2: Engineering the future
Note: This slide looks at what innovative designs engineers may invent in the future. Group Work: Encourage the class to use their imagination to think like engineers and imagine what engineers will design in the future. Ask the students what problem would they like to try solve in the future? Write the students ideas on the board. You can prompt the students and tell them some of the problems that the engineers of the future will have to solve, e.g. Environmental pollution Global warming Healthcare improvements Renewable energy Water treatment Flood prevention

3 PP3: Engineering is for everyone
Note: Engineering is for everyone. The profession is embracing diversity and engineering is a career that is open to everyone. Engineers work in almost all industries from aviation, agriculture and space to healthcare, manufacturing and software – and everywhere in between. It’s a great time to be thinking about getting into engineering. Engineers are in demand in many sectors right now, especially the software and IT industry, the medical devices sector and the pharmaceutical industry, and the energy and environmental sectors. The engineering sector has huge opportunities. Ireland is the largest exporter of software in the world. Useful: Refer to pages 10, 11, 4 and 5 – Engineering your Future guidebook

4 PP4: Engineering is in demand
Note: We need more engineers in Ireland. Did you know that engineers can become famous for their work? Irish engineers have been at the heart of some of the world’s most important creations such as Peter Rice was a structural engineer from Dundalk who designed the Sydney Opera House; John Philip Holland developed the first submarine to be formally commissioned by the U.S. Navy. Engineers can change the world. Question: Now that we are coming near the end of the presentation what do you think about engineers now? What surprised you the most?

5 PP5: Useful resources Note: This slide shows the resources available through STEPS that are useful for students and teachers.    Maths resources - Downloadable maths worksheets for teachers, showcasing real-world maths - Maths video tutorials for Junior Cert & Leaving Cert maths Career resources - A comprehensive guide to engineering as a career - Career videos: Young engineers talk about their work in their own words Engineers Week Engineers Week events will take place across the country, in companies, schools, and local venues. Get involved! Find out how on engineersweek.ie Engineering Your Future Hosted by a number of colleges around the country, the Engineering Your Future programme for Transition Year students provides a week of exposure to the various engineering disciplines. Applications open each January, and the programme runs in May. Smart Futures Smart Futures is a national programme promoting careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) to second-level students in Ireland.

6 www.steps.ie PP6: Useful websites Note:
For further information, direct students to STEPS and Smart Futures websites. Explain that Smart Futures is a national programme promoting careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) to second-level students in Ireland. Encourage the students to research the field of engineering that appeals to them the most. FYI STEPS works in strategic partnership with SFI Discover on Smart Futures, a collaborative government-industry-education programme promoting STEM careers to post-primary students in Ireland.
