British Attacks in the East: after defeating France in April 1814, they sent more troops to America, attacking D.C., President Madison was forced to flee, British set fire to White House, Capital building, and other buildings; then sailed to Baltimore, shelling Fort McHenry for 25 hours- Americans refused to surrender, British retreated The Battle of New Orleans: British wanted control of port and Mississippi River; faced Andrew Jackson who became a hero of the last major conflict of the War of 1812
