2 Healthy Norwich focus:-
In 2013, Norwich made a commitment to the WHO ‘Healthy Cities’ global movement. Partners made a pledge to work together to make Norwich a healthier community. Healthy Norwich focus:- tests new ways to prevent ill health/promote wellness works collaboratively with its partners to empower & support vulnerable groups in addressing health inequality 3 priority areas - Smoking, Healthy Weight & Affordable Warmth Key partners are Public Health, Norwich City Council and Broadland District Council, who are all represented on the steering group to provide governance Healthy Norwich has three clear priority areas of activity - Smoking cessation and prevention Promoting healthy weight and lifestyles Affordable warmth The following is brief snapshot of the work we are doing

3 Local smoke-free activity
Smoking remains the biggest cause of preventable deaths in Norfolk, and the HN activity focused heavily on ‘denormalising’ smoking around children, supporting thee ambition to achieve a ‘smokefree generation’. Changing social smoking norms helps positively influence children’s decisions not to start smoking Smokefree Play Parks – 2016 Smoke Free Park signage has been placed in play areas to ask adults not to smoke nearby. This voluntary code will directly help prevent children and young people taking up smoking and potentially help smokers to seek support to quit Aims to de-normalise smoking 85 x Norwich City Council parks Across Broadland District Council 2) #smokefreesidelines Norfolk wide project delivered with Norfolk Football Association 1/3rd Norfolk youth team (1200 players). Supportive UEA formal evaluation National recognition 1/3rd of Norfolk Youth clubs have now signed up to this scheme, with over 1200 youth members. Recent positive media coverage and interest from other authorities and Public Health Teams. UEA research due out shortly of the impact. Hope this demonstrates smokefree spaces are socially acceptable and will contribute towards a cultural shift away from smoking in front of children.

4 Pioneering #smokefreesidelines – National impact
National Recognition with significant social media coverage. Public Health Hull, the local FA & Active Humber – Across Football & Rugby Ash Wales Smokefree Nottingham are also working with their local Football Association to launch the smokefree initiative in 2018/19. Other local authorities, such as Rochdale Council, have been in touch interested in our Norfolk activity. Exciting Norfolk Wide project bringing together a number of partners inc. all 7 DC, Public Health, Smoke-free Norfolk and Active Norfolk.

5 Promoting Healthy Weight & Lifestyles
Sadly, evidence shows increasing levels of obesity in both adults & children in Norwich. 1 in 5 start primary school overweight & rises to 1 in 3 by time children go to High School. A number of work streams are being delivered to support and promote healthy lifestyles. These include Promotion of the Daily Mile Breastfeeding Friendly GP Surgeries – 32 GPs, Nurses undertake extra training – UNICEF, tongue-tied & benefits of breastfeeding for mental health & PTL & 19 practices are now ‘Breastfeeding Friendly’ Sugarsmart project aimed at young teenagers – commissioned MAP to develop this offer in 3 local high schools Holiday Hunger programme – FISH at Lakenham Primary school, and has been able to run in subsequent years. Testing Whole Systems Approach to Obesity with ‘Healthy Living Heartsease’.

6 The Daily Mile Participation Map
Daily Mile promotion - our work has ensured Norwich & Norfolk is featured on the national DM participation map - Project was delivered in collaboration with Active Norfolk, all primary schools in Norfolk received locally developed resources - Short film showcasing Norwich primary pupils running the daily mile has been shown on the TV screens in GP surgeries for 2 years - GP practices in Norwich also engaged directly with local primary schools to promote DM

7 Social Prescribing pilot 2016/17
Independent evaluation found patients had… increase in activity increase in general health increased wellbeing scores significant decrease in GP appointments (44% year on year). Healthy Norwich ran a small pilot in 2 surgeries, over a 18 month period. Small patient cohort, but outcomes were of significant interest and has helped to shape the current social prescribing model in place across Norwich, with Public Health funding Other projects currently underway include:- Accident Prevention project aimed at young families, delivered by Norwich City Council. Piloting Health Coaching for long term conditions with Voluntary Norfolk.

8 Healthy Norwich small grants programme
Small grants awarded to charitable, voluntary and community groups commenced in 2016 Mental Wellbeing Innovation Fund & Innovation to Support Sustainable Healthy Communities Fund £96K , 22 Grants for 16 organisations. Supports on the ground ‘pilot’ projects Numerous successes, but 2 to highlight….. GoodGym – combining running with good deeds in the community – A weekly running club with over 230 members and average of 30 runners most weeks, 2,245 good deeds and in the top 10 for the most popular Goodgyms around the country and there are approx 50 clubs. 12th Man project identified barber shops as positive spaces where discussions about mental wellbeing could happen. Barbers are trained in Mental Health First Aid and subtle prompts are used to encourage these discussions. This Healthy Norwich project won a national award in November 2017 HN success has been recognised in the recently published JHWS
