Living world review
2
Ecosystem This the interactions between all the Biotic (living ) and Abiotic (Non living) things in a given place and time. Abiotic: Rocks, water, air, earth, climate, Habitat Biotic: Food chains, breeding, adaptations, competition (for space, light, water, and food)
3
Population All of one (1) species
That live in the same habitat at the same time. Populations compete for Shelter A mate Food water
4
Niche Special role that the species plays in its habitat
How it adapts to climate physically How it builds its shelter What it eats and when it eats How it shares its food source
5
Adaptations How fit a species is means
how well it is adapted to its niche. Adaptations can be physical or behavioral They can adapt to their food source -communications Habitat -reproduction Climate
6
Success is having grandchildren
A species Individuals that are: so similar can mate and produce fertile young in their natural habitat The more they “fit” their niche, the more children will survive and have children. This is success in the natural world
7
Natural selection We call this success natural selection.
The animals with the best traits live longer They stay warm, get enough food, and don’t get eaten. Therefore they have more babies. More of the successful traits get handed down They accumulate over time The population evolves.
8
Which peppered moth is more likely to be eaten by Blue Jays?
before industrial revolution 1895’s: after the industrial revolution1 NO POLLUTION! Trees are covered in lichen Pollution kills lichen. Trees covered with soot from factories 5% of the moths were white 95% were black 98% of moths were white 2% were black
9
Taxonomy This is how we organize all the different species.
We give each individual a scientific name Genus species eg Homo sapiens (You) These are the smallest groups The biggest groups are Kingdoms there are 5 Animal Plant Fungus Protista Monera You fern yeast amoeba bacteria
10
What are the characteristics of living things
Move Grow Reproduce They need energy The excrete They respond to stimuli They are made of cells This is the most important characteristic Is a flame alive? Yes it flickers Yes it spreads Yes light a candle Yes fuel (wax or wood) Yes smoke Yes blow on a flame No therefore they are not alive.
11
What does a cell look like?
It depends on what job they do There are all different kinds of cells
12
Generalized Animal cell
13
Generalized plant cell
