Inspiration for experiment The BIG question….um…?

HDL & LDL High and Low Density Lipoproteins Atherosclerosis: Hardening of the arteries by deposit of LDLs in the bloodstream Atherogenic diet: A diet composed of high fat content

Quantitative Trait Loci: These are stretches of DNA that are closely linked to the genes that underlie the trait in question. These traits are what affect the different expressions of phenotypes

Statistical analysis used to demonstrate interaction between genes Determines whether they produce an effect on phenotype

Purpose Mice Diet

HDL levels higher in males than females HDL levels in SM x NZB population were similar to those of SM mice. HDL levels in NZB x SM higher than in SM x NZB

Female NZB x SM mice showed HDL levels intermediate between the parental strains. Male NZB x SM mice had HDL levels similar to NZB mice. The F2 population had high levels of HDL after consuming an atherogenic diet.

1. Atherogenic diets do not have the same effects on all mouse strains 2. It is important to differentiate between the two sexes in QTL analysis

3. Most important changes happened in the first 6 weeks on high fat diet. 4. Males have significantly higher HDL levels than females

We would like to thank the following people for their instruction and contributions: Jackson Laboratory Randy Von Smith Tobias Beckwith NMSU RISE program
