MONDAY, AUGUST 20TH Good Morning!!!
Pick a desk. Please only choose one facing the White Board. Do not sit at the counter under the cabinets. Please pick up a marker and card stock from the table near the door and return to you seat. Fold the card stock in ½ long ways. Please write your first name (the one you like to be called) on one side and place on your desk facing the White Board. Pick up a syllabus and a copy of the 9th Grade Expectations from the counter between the windows. Please read the Expectations and be prepared to discuss them. We will go over the syllabus together. Please return the signature sheets from behind this week. They will be recorded as a quiz grade.

District Rules No Cell Phones used during school hours except during Lunch. No earbuds or headphone. Phones should not be visible, including back pockets. First offense is a verbal warning. Second offense phone will be kept until the end of 7th Period. Dress code is to be followed.

Classroom Policies Come to class prepared and on time. This includes having pen, pencil, paper and completed assignments on hand. This is an interactive class and questions are encouraged. Raise your hand to be recognized. Absolutely no electronic devices (cell phones, tablets, mp3 players) are to be used in class. There will be no disrespecting of other students or the teacher. You may not agree with another’s opinion, but you have no right to disrespect them for it. There is no one in this room that is stupid. I will not tolerate a person calling someone else stupid!

What is needed for Geography Class
A positive and open mind. Pen/pencil with a spiral notebook or binder with paper. Your notebook will be where all your Bell ringers and notes will be kept. Notebooks can be kept in the cabinets with your classes period number on it. They will be graded weekly and count as 30% of your grade.

If this is your first day please ask a fellow student about a Name Card. Get your name card and notebook from the class cabinet. Place your Name Card on the desk. Take your seats. Take out a Learning Style Questionnaire handout from the counter between the windows. Please fill out the Learning Style Questionnaire be prepared to discuss the results.

(4) What is one unique fact about yourself? Be prepared to share your answers with the class.

What is Cultural World Geography?
scientific and systematic study of both the physical and cultural features of the earth’s surface. It is a spatial perspective looking at patterns and distributions on the earth’s surface The word geography was invented by the Greek scholar Eratosthenes. It is based on 2 Greek words: -Geo – “Earth” -graphy – “to write”

Globalization Refers to the intensified geographical movements across national borders of commodities, people seeking employment, money and capital investment, knowledge, cultural values, and environmental pollutants

1st – Hyper-globalization view
Open markets and Free Trade are good for everyone in the long run and will allow everyone to share in economic prosperity Work will eventually become borderless as national governments become meaningless, government’s only role will be to foster trade

2nd – Skeptical View Globalization is “much ado about nothing”
Globalization is exaggerated The world has been to this point before = Gold Standard Accentuate Regionalization (Europe, N. America, Japan)

3rd – Trans-Formationalist View
View globalization as a powerful force that is changing the world not just a repeat of the 19th Century. However, they make no assumptions to the effect of globalization on the nation state

The World in Spatial Terms Location - Where is this region located? Absolute Location- exactly where it is, using latitude and longitude or an address. – Relative location- Where something is located according to something you already know.

Place (what it is like, makes it unique or special) Human Characteristics- people put it on the earth, man-made Physical characteristics – What kind of land features are present? Friday Bell Ringer Please get your notes and take a seat.
We will have 10 minutes to look over your notes and a 5 minute last chance question session. Each student will do their own work. Copying is an instant 0! Quiz will consist of 17 multiple choice questions, 6 matching and 2 short answer. There will be 2 extra credit questions worth 2 points each. When you are done with the quiz must remain quiet for those still taking the Quiz.
