1 9.2 Factors and Prime Factorization
Objective: student will identify factors of numbers and be able to identify composite vs prime factors. They will also be able to demonstrate how to write a number as being prime factored.

2 Factors Ex: Factors of 24 Ex: Factors of 45
Factors: whole numbers multiplied together to get another number. Ex: Factors of 24 Ex: Factors of 45

3 Examples Write all factors of 30. Write all factors for 63

4 2 types of numbers Prime number: Composite number:
Whole number greater than 1 2 factors: 1 and itself Ex: 2, 3, 5, 11 1 x 2 1 x 3 1 x 5 1 x 17 Composite number: Whole number greater than 1 Number that has more than 2 factors Ex: 6 1 x 6 and 2 x 3 1, 2, 3, 6

5 Prime/Composite Ex: are the numbers prime or composite?
24 41 51 89

6 Prime/Composite Ex: are the numbers prime or composite?
32 106 59 83 101 175

7 Prime Factorization Prime factorization: written as product of prime numbers. Factor tree: diagram helps write prime factorization. Write the prime factorization for 56 56

8 Prime Factorization Ex.
Write the prime factorization for 36. 36 Write the prime factorization for 16 16

9 Factoring Monomials Monomial: To factor: Ex: Factor 15n3 15n3
Product of numbers/variables One or more variables raised to a power. Ex: 32m2x4 To factor: Prime factor number Variables must have exponents of 1 Ex: Factor 15n3 15n3

10 Factoring Monomials Ex.
35xy2 -21ab 40m2n 2x3y3

11 Wrap-up Questions/Concerns? IC/HW: workbook pg. 117
