2 Figure 1 Dietary fish oil supplementation enhances protein content and mechanical strength of cornified cell envelopes (CEs) in rat skin. CEs were isolated from the dorsal skin of rats fed with control or fish oil-supplemented diet. (a) Total CE protein amount was quantified. The results are expressed as protein level per coenocyte (N = 11). (b) The mechanical strength of CEs was measured by their ability to resist sonication. CEs were sonicated for 5 or 10 seconds. Intact envelopes before (T = 0) and after (T = 5, 10 seconds) sonication were counted using a hemocytometer (N = 12). Data are mean ± SEM. *P < SEM, standard error of the mean.
