1 Picture Perfect Science: The Wind Blew
Presented by: Shana Prue and Lisa Campbell Tally grade levels represented in the sessions.

2 Learning Targets: By the end of this session you will:
Integrate picture books into your inquiry-based science lessons using the 5-E Model. Build an understanding of incorporating engineering practices in your science lessons. Learn through inquiry that wind is moving air and that air is matter even though you can’t see it.

3 Integrated Standards Core Idea: PS1 Matter and it’s interactions
PS1.A: Structure and properties of matter Core Idea: PS3 Energy PS3.C: Relationships between energy and forces Reading Literature: Key ideas and details Reading Informational text: Key ideas and details Pull up the NGSS and Curriculum Engine so that we can show the grade level continuum.

4 5-E Model Engage: Activate prior knowledge
Explore: Use inquiry-based hands-on activities for students to generate explanations for scientific phenomena Explain: Teacher provides students information and clarifies understanding Elaborate: Students build further connections Evaluate: Teacher assesses student learning

5 5-E Model

6 Engage: Read Aloud Challenge students to infer what “it” is as you read the book aloud without showing illustrations or cover. Read The Wind Blew by Pat Hutchins aloud. Students will discuss with a partner what “it” is. Discuss as a class what students think “it” is. Go back and look at some illustrations to support inference Use printed labels for students to connect to the text in their science notebook. Explain that we will focus on the Engage and Explore steps of the 5-E model, but htat

7 Explore: Wind Challenges
Gather materials: 1 Ping Pong Ball 1 Measuring Tape 1 Cup 1 Air Pump Complete Wind Challenges with a partner.

8 Explain Read aloud I Face the Wind by Vicki Cobb
Pause throughout to ask questions and do activities. Read pages 1-12 “What is the wind made of?” Try it using plastic bag. There are many more activities in the lesson that allows for students to continue to build their knowledge and reinforce what they have learned.

9 Summary The Elaborate and Evaluate activities are included in your packet. This lesson is intended to extend over 5 sessions.
