The plot is the way the story’s action is organized. Plots usually have a beginning, a middle and an end. Most plots are organized like this. Exposition Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution

Exposition Introduces Characters Conflict (people and animals)
Setting (place and time) Conflict ( The Problem)

Rising Action The main character tries to solve the problem , which grows more difficult

Climax The main character succeeds or fails. The excitement is usually greatest at this point

Falling Action The characters feel the effects of the climax and the events caused by the climax

Resolution The story comes to a conclusion; the main character may learn a life lesson

Point of View Who is telling the story?
First Person ( narrator is I, me , myself, we our) Third Person ( not a character in the story, perhaps the author) 3rd person describes the characters and events without being part of the action

Purpose of a story /text
Purpose may be stated or implied An author writes to: Inform ( factual information) Influence ( persuade the reader to think or believe the same things the author does) Entertain ( to make the reader laugh, cry, feel suspense or otherwise enjoy the writing) Express ( pour out thoughts and feelings poetry, journal writing)

Author’s Tone Tone= Attitude
Author’s approval or disapproval of a topic For example a certain bicycle is on sale at a local bike shop. The author might say it is inexpensive ( the tone is positive . The bike is a good buy. The author might say the bike is cheap. ( the tone is negative . The bike is poor quality.)

Genres A genre is a type. There are different types of reading and writing Fiction- a made up story Types of fiction include: Mystery Adventure Fantasy Horror Science Fiction Historical fiction
