Writing Expressions An algebraic expression is an expression that contains a variable. For example: x – 4 or 5(n+3) When solving a problem you may have to translate words or phrases into algebraic expressions. The following chart shows the operations that may be suggested by words or phrases: Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division plus minus Times Divided by sum difference product quotient More than Less than Double or twice (×2) triple (×3) Half of ( ÷ 2) Increased by Decreased by by Separate equally Gain of Less of per
