1. Ion-selective push-pull pyridoannulenes

Push-Pull Pyridoannulenes : We have previously prepared a “symmetric” series of [14]-annulenes with electron-donating alkoxy groups and electron-withdrawing pyridine rings (1-3). These compounds exhibit different spectroscopic properties based on the heteroatom orientation.
We aim to prepare a new series of “asymmetric” annulenes to compare to our symmetric series. To this end, we have attempted to prepare annulene 9. Unfortunately, conversion of X to Y is extremely poor forcing us to explore other synthetic routes.
