Hope of 1920s died in the 1930s – almost all dictatorships in 1930s Totalitarianism: Single-party dictatorship w/ control over ALL aspects of life Strong, charismatic leader State controls economy Police, spies, terror to enforce Gov’t controls media Schools/ youth orgs to influence children Censorship of art, intellectuals, political opposition

What are the similarities between the regimes? What are the differences between the regimes? What was unique about Japan’s regime as compared to the other 3? What is the difference between Italy’s Fascism & Germany’s Nazism? Why do you think so many people supported these regimes even after it became apparent that these regimes were killing their own citizens?
