1 Biphasic changes in angiopoietin-like 8 level after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and type 2 diabetes remission during a 1-year follow-up  Eman Al-Shawaf, Ph.D., Ebaa Al-Ozairi, M.D., Fahad Al-Asfar, M.D., Shaima Al-Beloushi, M.Sc., Surbhi Kumari, M.Sc., Jaakko Tuomilehto, M.A., M.D., Ph.D., Hossein Arefanian, Ph.D.  Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases  Volume 14, Issue 9, Pages (September 2018) DOI: /j.soard Copyright © 2018 American Society for Bariatric Surgery Terms and Conditions

2 Fig. 1 Fasting basal serum levels of ANGPTL8 in all study groups. (A) Data of participants with type 2 diabetes (T2D; 1846 ± 205 pg/mL, n = 36) and those without T2D (873 ± 125 pg/mL, n = 38) were pooled, showing a significantly higher increase in the presence of T2D (P < .01). (B) Data of participants with morbid obesity (1105 ± 127 pg/mL, n = 40) and healthy weight (1630 ± 235 pg/mL, n = 34) were pooled, showing a significantly lower ANGPTL8 serum level in the participants with morbid obesity (P value < .05). (C) Quantification of ANGPTL8 in all study groups showed a significant (*) increase in participants with morbid obesity and diabetes (1415 ±196.4 pg/mL, P < .01, n = 17) compared with participants with morbid obesity (876 ± 155 pg/mL, n = 23), and participants with healthy weight and diabetes (2231 ± pg/mL, P < .01, n = 19) compared with healthy weight (868.9 ± pg/mL, n = 15). Levels of ANGPTL8 in normal weight participants with T2D was the highest among all study groups, showing statistical significance P < (**). 3 Fig. 2 (A) Pattern of change in fasting serum ANGPTL8 levels during 1 year post laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in participants with morbid obesity and diabetes (black circles, n = 11, 6, 11, 10, 9, 10, 10, and 9 participants at each follow-up time point), and in participants with morbid obesity (white circle, n = 17, 14, 16, 12, 9, 12, 12, and 12 participants at each follow-up time point). In participants with morbid obesity and type 2 diabetes, the initial low level of ANGPTL8 (1330 ± pg/mL, n = 11) shows a significant (P < .01) increase (3336 ± pg/mL, n = 9) at day 60, which drops back to low levels at day 360 (1184 ± pg/mL, n = 9). In participants with morbid obesity only, ANGPTL8 initial levels (718 ± pg/mL, n = 17) display a nonsignificant increase on day 30 (1209 ± pg/mL, n = 12), which drops back at day 360 (675 ± pg/mL, n = 12). (B) Classification of participants according to fasting plasma glucose level on day 60 post-LSG. Comparing ANGPTL8 between people with hyperglycemia (prediabetes stage, 5.6 < fasting plasma glucose ≤6.9 mmol/L; n = 7, 2719 ± 1129 pg/mL, P = .72) and normoglycemia (n = 2, 2147 ± 1123) shows no significant difference. (C) Statistically significant increased level of ANGPTL8 post-LSG in participants with hyperglycemia (prediabetes) at day 60 post-LSG (2719 ± 1129, n = 7, P = 0.03) compared with their basal ANGPTL8 level (1413 ± 398.9, n = 7).
