3.5.3.1 Fluidized bed for mass-production of shells
Overall Purpose: Bring industrial technologies to IFE target fabrication - $120K extend scope of OFES grant for fluidized bed to include wider range of process conditions and focus on higher-strength/permeability materials explore feasibility for low-cost mass production Deliverable: Document as part of IFE Target Scale-Up Report, Feb. 2002 Electron microscope photo showing ~3 m polymer coating as deposited in fluidized bed Coating Layer Mandrel PAMS Fluidized bed with about 500 ~2 mm OD mandrels ready for coating …. first attempts at coating in a fluidized bed were encouraging

3.5.3.3 Foam shell mass production
Overall Purpose: Perform evaluations and scoping experiments for “one-step” concept of foam shell/overcoat production - $100K Scoping experiments for concept evaluation Evaluate methods for scaleup Deliverable: Document as part of IFE Target Scale-Up Report, Feb. 2002 …. This concept could streamline a future foam shell microencapsulation process
