Jot down what it tells you. Compare your answers with your partner’s.
Interpreting data S2.4 Core Plenary This chart was drawn by Florence Nightingale. Jot down what it tells you. Compare your answers with your partner’s. Preamble This gives pupils the opportunity to interpret a new statistical graphic (with some historical background). Allow pupils sufficient time to discuss what the chart is ‘saying’ and then collect these in as part of a whole-class discussion exercise. Possible content Interpretation of a novel statistical graphic. Resources None – but in some cases some graphing software projected from a PC projector might be useful. Solution/Notes Pupils may need guiding into realising that numbers are represented by areas of the sectors – but if at all possible allow them to reach this conclusion for themselves. This might be an appropriate time to consider some of the plethora of charts possible using the chart wizard – most pupils (and adults) have seen these, but few have paused to consider what they are! Scope here for a homework mini-investigation? Original Material © Cambridge University Press 2009 Original Material © Cambridge University Press 2009
