Color Groups What mood is established by the words used in the first 5 paragraphs of the story? Answer the question to the right with your color group. Look at your annotations to guide your discussion, and find evidence from the text to support your response. Student Look-Fors Sample responses: By describing the setting with words such as, “clear and sunny” the author creates a happy, peaceful mood. The setting is very excited. The text describes an idyllic summer day in a small village.

What to Look For… Listen as I read paragraphs 6-41 of the text.
Highlight words or phrases that describe aspects of the lottery traditions using one color. Highlight words or phrases that reveal characters’ perspectives of the lottery traditions using another color. Guiding Questions and Prompts: What does this paragraph tell us about the lottery? Where in the text did you find that answer? Is this textual example about the lottery tradition or a character’s perspective about the lottery. Student Look-Fors Sample highlighted text: Describe aspects of the lottery tradition- “...it was the business of the official of the lottery to ask such questions formally.” Reveal characters’ perspectives about the lottery- “...soft laughter ran through the crowd…”

Daily Writing Practice
Look at the writing prompt on page 197 of your purple guide books. It asks, “According to the text, how does tradition influence the villager’s behavior?” As you work to construct a response, remember the following: Answer using the CCC format. You have hopefully done a lot of annotating that can offer some guidance. Make sure you include at least one direct quote from the text to support your answer. Ask questions if you need help!
