Lesson 52: Is, Ea, Id preview
Before we begin please read page 354 “Grammar” of your textbook. This will give you a preview of what you are about to learn. How can you distinguish between “is” as a pronoun and adjective? What is the difference between hic, ille and is? Think less about translation and more about context.

Nominative Singular is ea id Genitive eius Dative ei Accusative eum eam Ablative eo eā Nominative Plural eae eorum earum eis eos eas

hic – this, refers to object close by ille – that, refers to object further away is – this/that/he/she/it, refers to an object just mentioned “is” is less emphatic than either hic or ille

Like all pronouns, is replaces a noun or pronoun N.B. that gender is based on the object it replaces. Not all “its” will use the neuter form e.g. “specto pecuniam”, “specto eam”

Lesson 51: Is, Ea, Id demonstrative adjective
Like all adjectives, forms of is have the same case, number and gender as what they modify e.g. ea aqua (“this water” or “that water”)
