1 Welcome to UHS & Honors English 9!
Please look for your name written on an index card. Sit at that desk. From the small table near the file cabinet, pick up the class syllabus. Take out your planner, a pencil or pen, and a highlighter (if you have one). Make any needed correction to your name on the index card. (Alexandra  Alex) Answer the following on the back of the index card: What do you dream your life will be like in 10 years? What should I know about you? Place your index cards on the corner of #1’s desk for collection. Introduce yourself to your tablemates. As a group, talk for a while to discover something you all have in common. Be ready to share and elaborate about what you all have in common with the whole group. Thank you!

4 Julian Mirano Honors English 9 & AP Literature
Taught 9th grade for 6 years & AP Literature for 2 Third year at UHS Expertise – Literature and Creative Writing Attended the University of Arizona and received a bachelor’s degree in Literature and Creative Writing and master’s degree in Teaching I like tennis, basketball, Star Wars, Harry Potter, poetry, reading, and writing.

(Mr. Mirano will circulate and collect the index cards.)

6 Syllabus Shoulder Partners If you need to, reintroduce yourselves.
Share two highlighted key ideas and a question you might ask to clarify your understanding of the syllabus. Be ready to share an idea and/or question with the whole group.

11 Bellwork 3 August 2018 Please take a blank sheet of paper and the two handouts that are on the table below the bulletin board. Sit wherever you would like today. Make a name plate, hot dog style, and place it at the front of your desk. Make sure your name is big enough so I can see it! Turn in your syllabus to the basket if it is signed. I will return it to you, so feel free to turn the whole thing in.

“Where I’m From” by George Ella Lyon

13 Read On your own, re-read “Where I’m From” by George Ella Lyon.
Take note of anything you find interesting.

14 Write Write an “I am From” poem using the given template.
Purpose: To build a community in the classroom and to get to know where everyone is from.

15 Study What does the text do?
What makes this an effective piece of writing? What techniques are used by the writer that elevates the writing? What moves does the writer make? Annotate the text by bracketing or underlining certain words and sentences. These annotations should focus on the “moves” the writer is making to make this an effective piece for her audience and purpose. Write several sentences about what you discovered in analyzing and evaluating the poem’s features and strategies in terms of how well the writer achieved her purpose. Take note of what your peers draw your attention to in the poem. Take note of what Mr. Mirano draws your attention to in the poem.

16 Create Revise your original list poem by trying to incorporate elements discussed by Mr. Mirano and your peers.

Complete “I am From Poem” and bring final typed copy to class on Monday/Tuesday. Begin looking for books for your Journey Into Literacy Project Freshman Grade Level Assembly Monday, August 6, 8-9 AM
