Main Idea + Vocabulary MAIN IDEA: Beginning in the 7th century, Islam was created by the Prophet Muhammad in modern-day Saudi Arabia. After Muhammad’s death, there was a split between his followers about who should take over. Over the next few hundreds of years, Islam spread to become the main religion of North Africa and West Asia (the Middle East). VOCABULARY: Dynasty PEOPLE: Muhammad; Sunnis and Shias; Caliph

Roman Empire Takes over
Between 100 BCE and 0, the Roman Empire took over the area around the Mediterranean Sea. This territory included the land of the ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia and the Fertile Crescent we have examined.

Roman Empire Takes over
The Romans spread Christianity throughout their empire (an example of cultural diffusion). However, as you will remember, the Roman Empire split into two halves. The western half collapsed in 476, but the eastern half would survive until 1453. Soon, a new group of people would take over a large amount of territory along the southern and eastern parts of the Mediterranean Sea.
