But Damasus rarely heard such praise. Internal political struggles, doctrinal heresies, and uneasy relations with his fellow bishops and those of the Eastern Church marred the peace during his time as Pope. During his pontificate, Christianity was declared the official religion of the Roman state, and Latin became the principal liturgical language as part of the pope’s reforms. His encouragement of Saint Jerome’s biblical studies led to the Vulgate, the Latin translation of Scripture which 12 centuries later the Council of Trent declared to be “authentic in public readings, disputations, preaching.” St. Damasus makes us aware of two qualities of good leadership – alertness to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and service. His struggles are a reminder that Jesus never promised his Rock protection from hurricane winds nor his followers immunity from difficulties. His only guarantee is final victory. Please place your food donations in the box near the door of each church. Food donations will be collected until Christmas to assist food pantries during the holiday season. Let us do our part to help feed those in need in our neighborhoods and communities! Advent Family Prayer God of Love, Your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us. He is a sign of your love. Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe On Tuesday, December 12th, we will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Francis Xavier Church. The procession will begin at Everisto's Tire & Appliance at 5:30 p.m., followed by Mass at 6:30 p.m. All are invited to come. Feast Day Prayer - December 11th: Saint Damasus, instead of worrying about the short term of life on earth, you took God's view and looked to the things that last. Pray for me that I may be able to look beyond immediate popularity and fleeting favors, and choose to do the things that God wants me to do. Amen Prepare for His Coming!
