Mother Teresa was born in Skopje in Northern Macedonia, in 1910
She was originally called Agnes Bojaxhiu When she was 18 she decided to become a nun and set off for Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin. She changed her name to Mother Teresa (after St. Thérese of Lisieux)

She trained as a teacher and became principal of a high school in Calcutta in India
While she was there she was horrified by the sight of so many sick and dying people on the streets

She knew that it was wrong and she was determined to do something about it although she didn’t really know what at first

In 1946 she was travelling to Darjeeling by train “when I heard the voice of God… I was sure it was God’s voice. I was certain he was calling me” His message was clear and she decided to leave the convent and help the poor by living among them.

She was saddened that many people were so poor that they lived and died on the streets, so she opened the Poor Heart Home She wanted poor people to be cared for when they needed it most A home for abandoned babies was set up in 1955 In 1957 a home was set up for Lepers

On 19 October 2003 she was declared ‘Blessed Teresa of Calcutta’ by Pope John Paul II, the first step on the road to becoming an official Saint of the Church On September 4th 2016 she will be declared ‘Saint Teresa of Calcutta’ by Pope Francis Why do you think Mother Teresa is being made a Saint?
