4 “A week in the life of A&E”
Debbie Graham HEAD OF SERVICE IMPROVEMENT CALDERDALE COMMISSIONING GROUP

5 Background Calderdale and Greater Huddersfield A&E services treat as many as 30% of patients who could have received treatment in a non-hospital setting. Whilst alternatives to A&E have been provided and publicised demand for A&E services is still high. Alternatives to A&E could be: GP practice including extended access Pharmacist Clinic NHS 111 walk in centre Dentist District or specialist nurse

6 Current A&E service Patient satisfaction is not as good as it could be – friends and family test Both A&Es were not built to cope with the current attendance Workforce and staffing is an increasing challenge – Medical staff Pressure on nursing staff Staff morale overall is not where we would want it to be

7 About the work we want to do
As part of a wider piece of work across West Yorkshire and Harrogate the local Accident & Emergency Delivery Board have been commissioned to undertake a review of the reasons for attendance to A&E We want to develop a facility and workforce model more appropriate to the needs to of the patients attending. Once completed this will provide a template for use by others to develop consistent urgent and emergency care models that are sensitive to local needs

8 ‘A week of A&E’ Understanding how and why our local population use A&E is one of the key areas to help develop this work. We will also: Use activity intelligence – this helps us understand who attends A&E and why Other engagement and patient experience information we already hold on urgent care services – including information from Right Care, Right Time, Rate Place By looking at all this information together we can identify what we need to do tp ensure services respond to local need.
