2 What is NATIONALISM? Overwhelming pride in one’s country Belief in your country being the best This often drives improvements to the nation After War of 1812  Intense nationalism in America Era of Good Feelings: time period of little political disagreement (one political party)

5 Securing of Borders and Expansion of Territory
In order to improve the nation, borders must be secure and territory must be acquired Adams-Onis Treaty (1819): America purchases Florida from Spain Kicking a European country out of North America  Greater safety and power for America Monroe Doctrine: European countries are no longer allowed to colonize parts of North and South America (the Americas)

6 Protective Tariff Tariff: a tax on imported goods Tax on imported goods  Makes foreign products more expensive  More people buy American products The purpose of a protective tariff is to protect American businesses

7 Internal Improvements
Roads, canals, and railroads are created in order to: 1) Connect the country 2) Expand business Most of these improvements were in the North and West

8 National Bank The purpose of the National Bank was to regulate the money supply and provide stability to the economy Many people were worried about the government having too much power
