3. Modern Forestry
Forestry is the science of managing trees for the benefit of humans
Forestry includes:
Growing & managing trees for wood products
Growing & managing trees to improve the quality of our environment
Forest land that productivity grows sufficient trees for harvesting is known as timberland

4. Urban Forestry
Urban forestry is the specialized area of forestry that deals with the growth and use of trees in cities.
Trees lower the temperatures along city streets
Shade homes
Provide aesthetic qualities that help people enjoy life
Habitat for birds and wildlife

6. Urban forestry includes:
Establishing and maintaining trees
Trimming trees near power lines
Urban environments are not always ideal for tree growth
Space for roots and limbs is limited
Watering, pest control, and other practices have to be adapted to the urban environment

8. Forest Land and Tree Farms
Forest Land is land on which trees are growing
Trees are often of native species
Trees are often growing without cultural practices
The following may vary within forest land
Quality and population of trees
The amount of wood production

9. Many wood products harvested today are from tree farms
To provide the vast amount of wood products needed, tree farms have been established
A tree farm is a privately owned timberland planted to desired species and carefully managed for top quality growth
These are NOT forests
No ecosystem present
Much like a corn field but with trees instead of corn stalks
Many wood products harvested today are from tree farms

11. More than Trees
The forestry industry is more than the production of trees, it includes all of the manufacturing activities that convert wood into desired products

12. Products include: Lumber Plywood and Veneer Paper Furniture
timber sawed into boards of varying sizes (1 x 6, 2 x 4, or lengths or 10 or 14 feet)
Plywood and Veneer
These wood products are created by gluing thin sheets of wood together
Plywood is generally a 4 x 8 foot sheet of varying thickness
Veneer is similar to plywood except the outer layer of one side is generally very valuable wood
Paper
Paper is made of specially grown and cut soft woods, which are able to be ground into Pulpwood
Furniture
Fine quality woods are used. Walnut, cherry, oak and mahogany are the most popular
Other products
Particle board
Utility poles
Fence posts
Christmas trees
Maple syrup

14. Tree Biology Trees have the same life proceses as other plants.
The must have:
Nutrients to grow
Roots to take up water and nutrients
Leaves to carry out photosynthesis to make food (sugar) for the tree
Reproduce to continue the species

15. Parts of a tree A tree is a woody perennial plant with 3 major parts
Roots
Trunk
Crown

17. Trunk is the main stem, it has several layers.
Crown is made of
Limbs
Leaves
Flowers
Fruit
Seeds

18. The tree trunk has the following layers:
Heartwood – older near the center
Sapwood- young growing wood which carries sap to the leaves – this is the region taped to get maple syrup
Bark protects the cambium and other parts form damage

20. Tree Growth
Trees continue to grow as long as they live. The grow in both diameter and height.
Height is the distance from the tips of the roots to the uppermost part of the crown.
Terminal buds in the crown send up new growth each year
Annual Rings are formed each year as the tree grows in diameter

21. Annual Rings
Annual rings are formed by the growth of Xylem tissue by the cambium
Each ring has both light and dark colored areas
The light areas are made in the spring while the dark areas are made in the summer, this difference makes the annual rings stick out

22. Growth in diameter is important in lumber and pulp production.
Larger diameter trees produce more wood
The width of the rings provide insight into the health and environment of the tree.
Small thin rings indicate a poor growing season.
Tree rings can even show damage from forest fires

23. Reproduction
Trees reproduce 3 ways:
Seeds
Sprouts
Suckers

24. Seed reproduction is the most important
Flowers are pollinated and seeds form in the ovary which can be located in cones, acorns, or pods
Sprouts and suckers are a form of asexual reproduction
Sprouts grow form the stem or a cut trunk
Suckers grow from the roots
