English I Lesson Plans Third Nine Weeks Unit 3: Romeo and Juliet
Overview: Students continue their study of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet as they complete their close read and annotation of the prologue, explore thematic topics introduced, and read Act I focusing on conflicts the characters face. In addition, to support their understanding of the play, students will view two different versions of Act I and compare.. Week of Feb 18 – Feb 22

Monday, February 18 BELLRINGER: Today we will: You will need:
Take a worksheet from the top tray and begin filling in the Guided Reading Questions for Act II, Scenes 1-3. Take an Academic Vocabulary Part Two Worksheet from the bottom tray. This will be due on Thursday, February 28th. Today we will: Complete Act II Guided Reading Questions Scenes 1-3 Read Act II, Scene 4 You will need: Your copy of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Act II Guiding Questions and Patterns of Language Handout

Review Last week, we read and annotated Friar Lawrence’s soliloquy from Act II, Scene 3 and we completed a timed writing exercise analyzing the language and structure used. Today, we will continue to analyze the language as we read Act II, Scene 4 of the play.

Review Yesterday, we read Act II, Scenes 5&6 looking for figurative language and patterns. Today, we will compare the written word of the play to the visual depiction of the film looking for similarities and contrasts between the two.

Before Viewing Take out your Different Artistic Medium handout, write your name at the top and prepare to begin taking notes

Viewing Look closely for changes that the director has made from the original play or anything that is not depicted as you would have expected it to be Take notes on your handout as you view the play

After Viewing Complete the Different Artistic Mediums handout.
On the bottom (or back), answer the following question: Did the director’s choice to add, remove, or change certain things seem justified? Choose one specific example and explain.

Act II Quiz ASSESSMENT This is an assessment and counts as a quiz grade. You will have only this class period to complete the quiz. You must do your own work. If you talk to a neighbor, you will receive a zero. If you look at a neighbor’s test, you will receive a zero and be written up. When you are finished, bring your test to the teacher and you may work on your Academic Vocabulary Part Two or any other incomplete assignments for Romeo and Juliet..
