Marriage is a divinely instituted reflection of the close and intimate union between Christ and the church (verses 30-32) 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.

Wives model this close and intimate union between Christ and the church through their submission to, and respect for, their husbands (verses 22-24, 33) 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. What does this submission look like?

Christ also submitted to the Father’s will “by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross,” (Philippians 2:8) dying for us not because we were obedient and loving towards Him, but rather, “while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son.” (Romans 5:10)

Wives model this close and intimate union between Christ and the church through their submission to, and respect for, their husbands (verses 22-24, 33) What does this submission look like? this submission is a voluntary choice It is rooted foremost in the wife’s faithfulness in her submission to the Lord It is not conditioned by her husband’s obedience to his obligations in the Marriage It reflects the beauty of Christ’s submission to the Father for the sake of the church

What does this submission look like?

Without exception and regardless of whether or not your wife submits or is respectful… Give of yourself sacrificially for your wife for her well-being in every way Set your wife apart as special by acting in her best interests make every effort to understand the needs of your wife down to the same level of understanding you have of your own needs & give of yourself to meet these needs as if they were your very own Deeply and tenderly care for your wife not unlike how a parent would care for a young child

To wives Receive your husband’s love, care and provision Gifts are given by God but spiritual maturity is built through obedience

To husbands You’re called to lead, not drive True love has a particular character “you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.” Peter 3:7, NLT
