3. Election of 1800
A. Jefferson ran against Aaron Burr in the Election of 1800
Both received the same number of Electoral College votes- neither earned a majority.
The House of Representatives would decide the outcome of this contest.
Jefferson became president and Burr became VP.

4. B. Deadlock revealed a flaw
Congress passed 12th amendment which called for electors to cast separate ballots for president and vice-president
Still is in effect today.

Election of 1800 John Adams – Federalist = 65 Thomas Jefferson – Dem./Repub.=73 Aaron Burr - Dem./Repub. = 73 There was a tie in the Electoral College between Burr & Jefferson at 73 votes each. When there is a tie the House of Representatives votes to break the tie. After 36 votes in the House, Jefferson is declared the winner & becomes President.

A. As the first Democratic-Republican President, Jefferson promised to make government more responsible to the ordinary citizen instead of protecting the rich.

Jefferson decided for a loose interpretation and purchased the territory
3. Purchased land from Napoleon (France) for $15 million in 1803; which France had just received back from Spain
4. Purchase doubles size of the US (Lewis & Clark explore territory)

A. 1804: Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark from St. Louis in 1804 to explore the newly acquired lands and to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean.

This expedition encouraged heightened the US desire to acquire land connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean
