How do you determine fact or myth? Criteria for examining biomedical research What/Who are the sources of the info? How reliable/credible are the sources? How is the information stated? Can the data be proven? Does the data support the claim? Is there any comparison data?

8 Applying Criteria to Biomedical Research
Language or choice of words matters Misleading words always, never, most people, indisputable proof Sensational language (tabloid) Is there absolute certainty? What does the phrase “Relatively Speaking” mean? "true in situations similar to the one at hand

9 Consider the following statements using the criteria to determine if it is fact or myth.
Animal research is NOT relevant to human health Most research animals are dogs or cats There are no laws that govern animal research There are alternative methods that can replace the use of animals in research
