Gave a sermon that influenced the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
Believed in democratic ideals like; elections by the people, limited government, and have to have the consent to be governed

Founder of Pennsylvania for the Quakers to live according to their beliefs
Believed in elected legislature and self-government

5. Charles (baron) de Montesquieu
Believed that the judiciary branch was necessary along with the executive and legislative branches
Wrote about separation of powers
Education was important

6. William Blackstone English judge and political writer
Believed in religious tolerance, self-defense and natural rights “life, liberty and ….”

7. John locke
Political writer that wrote about natural rights “life, liberty and property.” Later was changed by Jefferson to trade property to liberty.
Government has a social contract with the people to rule
