Many Americans identify with a certain religion—they call themselves Catholic, Methodist, Jewish, Buddhist, or Muslim. But how well do American’s know their own religion? How much does it really influence their lives?

2. Many Americans, don’t necessarily KNOW much about their religions, but they still choose to practice and identify with one specific faith. Why is religion so important in America?
Our founding fathers, many of whom were Christians who came to this country seeking religious freedom, were influenced by their religions. Religion has helped to shape our history in this nation and encouraged the growth of democracy in America!

3. Self-Government in Action: The House of Burgesses
Early colonists of Virginia applied the principles of democratic government when they created the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1619.
This was the first representative legislature in the English colonies— most of the representatives in the House were elected by the people of Virginia.

4. Religion and Democracy: The First Great Awakening
The First Great Awakening was a religious movement in the colonies that encouraged deeper religious enthusiasm and political independence.
It led colonists to believe that all people were equal under the eyes of God.
