Space spinoffs and exploration

2
Space Exploration Space shuttles Space probes Space stations
A space craft that carries people (a crew) back and forth to space Reusable, needs liquid fuel (gas) Multiple uses- taking satellites into orbit, repairing damaged satellites, carrying astronauts and equipment Space probes Carry equipment to collect data NO HUMANS Powered by electronic system Space stations Astronauts live there for extended periods of time Complete experiments Uses solar panels as a source of power
3
Examples of Each Space Shuttles Space Probes Space Stations
Columbia (exploded) Apollo (one of which went to the moon) Challenger (exploded with people on board) Space Probes Galileo- studied Jupiter and its moons Lunar prospector- studied Earth’s moon Opportunity/ Curiosity- studied Mars Cassini- studied Saturn and the moon Titan Space Stations International Space Station Also known as the ISS Shower in space People from various countries live and work here
4
Using Space Science on Earth
The conditions in space are different from those here are earth The three conditions are Vacuum Space is empty of all matter No sound travels through Microgravity Feeling of weightlessness Extreme temperatures There is no atmosphere Temperatures are not regulated There is no way for human to breathe
5
Space Spin Offs Due to the conditions of space, scientists had to create new technology Some of that new technology designed for space has been modified for uses on earth We call these “space spinoffs”
6
Examples of Space Spinoffs
Miniature parts/electronic chips Artificial limbs Metal alloy made of titanium and nickel braces Cordless power tools- no electricity Cordless power tools Fire resistant material Protects fire-fighters
7
Satellites Used for: Collecting data Communicating Transmitting data
Weather others Communicating With space craft Airplanes Other satellites Transmitting data Television/cell phones/internet
8
Satellites also… Use remote sensing to communicate with other satellites Which means they communicate without being in direct contact Satellites have different orbits based on their job Most satellites are in a geosynchronous orbit Which means it orbits earth at the same rate as the earth rotates
