1 AS-LEVEL FINE ART SECTION 3 MONO PRINTING

2 LEARNING OBJECTIVES YOU WILL…
Develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of printmaking processes – initially starting with monoprinting. Learn to use printmaking equipment, tools, materials and media successfully in order to produce effective outcomes. Generate a variety of outcomes using your most successful monoprints.

3 monoprinting RECAP EQUIPMENT YOU WILL NEED (between 2):
Who can remember what monoprinting is and can offer an explanation about the process? Who knows one of the many techniques that can be used to create a monoprint? What are the benefits of monoprinting? EQUIPMENT YOU WILL NEED (between 2): 4 long strips of A2 paper. A selection of leaves (you should have brought). A clear/empty table. A printing roller and printing palette. Printing ink (black, blue or green). Newspaper.

5 REMEMBER TO PUT YOUR NAME ON THE BACK OF ALL YOUR PIECES OF PAPER!!
LESSON 1 TASK Get into pairs. Choose either black, blue or green ink. Coat one strip of paper entirely with ink to act as your ‘plate’. Then, lightly roll over several leaves and place these onto a clean strip of paper with the inked side down. Place your ‘plate’ on the top with the ink faced down. Carefully carry this to the printing press and between sheets of newspaper, pass your paper through the press. Afterwards, peel off the leaves. DO THIS ON 3 SHEETS OF PAPER. Finally, take clean leaves and place these back onto your already printed strips. Place the ‘plate’ on the top (you may need to re-ink this first) and then pass it through the press again. This should leave you with silhouette shapes once you peel them off. REMEMBER TO PUT YOUR NAME ON THE BACK OF ALL YOUR PIECES OF PAPER!!

7 LESSON 2 TASK 1 YOU WILL NEED TO GET INTO GROUPS OF 3
Choose 3 different ink colours. Each person will roll a layer of ink onto a table surface and remove lots of the excess ink with newspaper. Place a sheet of A4 paper on top of the first colour (each person use their own colour to begin with). Using various drawing implements (pencil, wooden end of paint brush, fork, spatula, finger etc.) and working from one of your natural form photographs that you have, draw the object(s) sketchily onto the back of the paper, which will pick up the ink from the table. You now have several drawings to do: - Some individual drawings with just singular colour, - Some drawings with a combination of 2 colours (line and tone), - Some drawings with a combination of all 3 colours (tonal variations can be achieved – highlight, midtone and shadow)

8 LESSON 2 TASK 2 Re-ink a surface but do not remove the excess.
Draw directly into the ink using different drawing implements, still working from the natural form photos that you have. Place a sheet of clean A4 paper on top of the design and press firmly on the back of the paper with a roller, lifting off the drawing from the table onto the paper. Do a few of these drawings. REMEMBER TO PUT YOUR NAME ON THE BACK OF ALL YOUR PIECES OF PAPER!! PLACE ALL PRINTS ONTO THE DRYING RACK UNTIL NEXT LESSON.

9 OUTCOMES – lesson 3 WATCH A TEACHER DEMONSTRATION HOW TO USE YOUR MONOPRINTS TO CREATE 2 EFFECTIVE OUTCOMES.

10 LESSON 3 TASKS CREATE YOUR CONCERTINA SKETCHBOOK USING YOUR 3 LONG MONOPRINT SHEETS. CREATE YOUR FINAL TRIPTYCH USING THE BEST SECTIONS OF YOUR MONOPRINT DRAWINGS. SELECT OUT ALL THE OTHER GOOD QUALITY PRINTS AND GLUE THESE INTO YOUR SKETCHBOOKS – BE SELECTIVE, YOU DO NOT NEED TO KEEP EVERYTHING!!!

11 Homework Make sure your concertina sketchbook and triptych are completed. Make sure that your monoprinting work is documented in your sketchbook. Add titles, evaluations and annotations (about the technique) to your monoprinting page(s) in your sketchbook. YOU ALSO NEED TO PRINT 3 OF YOUR CLOSE- UP MACRO PHOTOS OF NATURAL FORMS FOR THE NEXT PRINTING STAGE
