Properties of Atoms and the Periodic Table
2
Si Elements are pure substances.
2. The Periodic Table of the Elements is a chart that organizes the elements. 3. Each element’s name is abbreviated on the Periodic Table. 14 Si 28.086 Silicon
3
Si 14 28.086 Silicon Atomic Number = the # of protons Symbol
Atomic Mass (amu) = #Protons + #Neutrons Name of the Element
4
Isotopes are atoms of the same elements, but with different numbers of neutrons.
There are 3 isotopes of Carbon: Isotopes Symbol # protons # neutrons Atomic Mass Carbon -12 C12 6 Carbon -13 C13 Carbon -14 C14
5

10
Abundant means that one isotope is more common than the others.
Carbon-12 is carbon’s most abundant isotope because we have more C12 than C13 or C14
11
Elements are organized by increasing atomic number from left to right.
12
2. Groups are the vertical columns (up and down)
Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons on their outer energy level. 3. Periods are the horizontal rows (side-to side) G R O U P S Periods
13
4. Elements are classified into 3 groups:
Metals - elements that are usually hard and can conduct electricity Ex – aluminum, gold, calcium
14
Non-metals – gases Ex- carbon, oxygen
15
Metaloids –have properties of both metals and non-metals
Ex – Boron, Silicon
