6.2 Factors Affecting the Rate of Chemical Reactions
Many factors can determine the rate a chemical reaction occurs: Temperature Concentration Surface area Catalysts A bicycle chain slowly rusts. See pages (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007

To make a reaction happen quickly: Increase the temperature.
Increase the concentration of reactants. Increase the amount of surface area that reacts. Add a catalyst or remove an inhibitor. To make a reaction happen slowly: Decrease the temperature. Temperature = the average energy of molecules.
The more energy molecules have, the higher the temperature. When molecules have more energy, they move around more, bump into other molecules more, and therefore react faster. Examples of changing reaction rate: To slow & prevent spoilage, we refrigerate. We cook food to speed up the production of new molecules. The chemical reaction rate is higher in hot water than in cold water. See page 275 (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007

Changing the concentration of O2 changes the intensity of flames.
Concentration = how many molecules of a substance exist in a certain volume (g/L). Concentration is how much solute is dissolved in solution. Usually, the higher the concentration = faster reaction rate. Since there are more molecules per unit volume in high concentrations, there are more opportunities for molecules to collide & react. Surface area = how much material is exposed to the reactants
Increasing SA = faster reaction rate. Since there are more atoms & compounds exposed to react, more reactions take place SA can be increased by creating smaller pieces. Ex) Powdered substance has far more SA than one large chunk. Steel wool (on the right) is made up of small strands of steel, and therefore has much more surface area than an equivalent amount of solid steel. See page 276 (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007

Salivary amylase increases the digestion of starches.
Catalysts Sometimes, increasing the temperature or concentration is not a good method to increase reaction rate. (Ex. Dangerous!) A catalyst = a chemical that allows a reaction to occur more quickly without actually participating in the reaction itself. Catalysts often lower the amount of energy necessary to break the bonds in the reactants. Enzymes are an example of biological catalysts. Ex) Saliva has enzymes that help speed the breakdown of starches. Salivary amylase increases the digestion of starches. See pages (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007

A catalytic converter is a device installed in cars to decrease pollution. Exhaust passes through before leaving the car. Catalysts found in the convertor’s honeycomb-shaped filters help to change many of the pollutants into less harmful substances. Poisonous CO is changed into CO2. Hydrocarbons are converted into CO2 and H2O. Nitrogen oxides are changed into N2 and O2. 2N2O3 2N2 + 3O2 A catalytic converter. See page 277 Take the Section 6.2 Quiz (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
