CHEMISTRY THE STUDY OF MATTER AND HOW IT CHANGES
CHEMISTRY CH 1 SEC 1 CHEMISTRY THE STUDY OF MATTER AND HOW IT CHANGES
2
BUILDING BLOCKS OF MATTER
ELEMENTS Cannot be broken down into simpler substances (a pure substance) Compounds Two or more atoms chemically combined in a definite ratio Ex CO2 This compound has 1 part C for every 2 O
3
COMPOUNDS In nature the majority of chemicals are found as compounds
4
MIXTURES & SOLUTIONS MIXTURES
Are made up of elements or compounds in the same place but not chemically combined. EX salt and pepper SOLUTIONS A well mixed mixture usually a liquid Ex Sea water- You can’t see the salt but you can taste it and it can be separated easily
5
CHANGES IN MATTER PHYSICAL CHANGE
A change that effects the form or appearance of a substance BUT no new material is formed. Ex- water is boiled and becomes a gas But it is still WATER (vapor)
6
CHANGES IN MATTER CHEMICAL CHANGES
A change that produces new substances but the same elements are used. EX when wood burns-Carbon,xygen and water are formed.
7
OBSERVING CHEMICAL REACTIONS
COLOR CHANGE PRECIPITATE FORMED GAS PRODUCED CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE EXOTHERMIC ENDOTHERMIC CHANGE IN PROPERTIES
