Drill Use distance formula to find the distance between the two points given below: (2, 5) and (8, 13) 2) Find the perimeter of a square if one of the sides is 7 feet. 3) Why couldn’t the perimeter of a shape be a negative number?
2
Chapter 5 Measuring In The Plane
3
5.1 Basics of Areas and Perimeters (Squares & Rectangles)
4
Perimeter of a Polygon The perimeter of a polygon is found by finding the sum of all the lengths of sides. Ex: 22 ft. 12 ft. 13 ft. 10 ft.
5
Area of a Polygon The area of a polygon is the number of square units enclosed by the polygon. Ex: The square below encloses nine square units so we would say the square has an are of 9 sq.un.
6
Postulates (5-1) The area of a square is the square of the length of the side. AREA = (s)(s) = (5-2) If two figures are congruent, then they have the same area. (5-3) The area of a region is the sum of the areas of it’s overlapping parts.
7
Area of a Rectangle The area of a rectangle is the product of its base and height. height base
8
Base H = 16 - B AREA 15 sq un 28 sq un 39 sq un 48 sq un 55 sq un
7 63 sq un 8 64 sq un 9 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 7
9
DRILL Find the area of a square with a side length of 6.
Find the perimeter of a rectangle with a height of 5 and a length of 6. What is the area of a square with a perimeter of 20 feet.
10
5.2 Areas of Parallelograms and Triangles
11
Area of a Parallelogram
Area of a parallelogram is the product of the base and height. Area = bh
12
Area = ½ bh Area of Triangle
The area of a triangle is ½ the product of the base and height. Area = ½ bh
13
