3 OR World Language Education: Which path should my child choose?
Is your child going to take World Language strictly for the honors diploma? If yes… WAIT until freshman year for level one. Why? There will be time to complete the requirement as well as a 4th level if desired. Is your child working toward fluency and post high school language education? If yes… TAKE a world language in 8th grade. Why? Your child will be on track for level 4 and AP AND will have a continuum of world language education up to the point of entering college. OR Mention: The take away for deciding yes or no to Spanish at 8th grade should come down to the long term goal for you child. Even though I strongly encourage each student to be a lifelong Spanish learner, I understand that isn’t the desire for everyone. Please take into consideration the end goal at high school for your child’s Spanish education. Spanish strictly for purposes of the honor’s diploma or honor’s diploma and beyond.

4 Sample Course Schedules

5 WL Instructional Shift: Comprehensible Input and Integrated Performance Assessments
Teachers- 90% in target languages Focus on communication/language functions Less focus on grammar More authentic and fun way to learn Assessments: Production-based, demonstrating what students know

6 Will my student be successful in Japanese?
-Interest in the language and culture -Willingness to try new things -Motivation to listen with focus, respond to questions, and ask when you need something clarified

7 How is a student successful in Spanish?
Take initiative! Immerse in the language and culture. Practice speaking, writing, listening and reading.

8 Should I wait and take German or French?
Utilizing the same methods as Japanese and Spanish classes Great for motivated students due to fast paced classes and those who don't feel ready for a language in 8th grade. Still allows students to take AP Exam and earn college credit at the end of high school.
