1 Design Process

2 Engineering design is a systematic, creative, and iterative (repetitive)process for addressing challenges. When a manufacture can produce a product over and over the same way every time they have a design process, they might use an assembly line that implements people or robots.

3 When designing, engineers must make informed choices based upon the following:
knowledge about the design problem revising the choices at any point in the process restraints like time and money

4 Constraints of a Design Limiting factors that must be considered
Time Money Resources People

5 Informed Design Method for making choices based on design problem
Method for making choice based on knowledge about the design problem and then revising as needed Process of making choices and decisions that lead to an acceptable solution

6 Professionals Professionals that might use the informed design process include: Engineers Technologists Designers (artists) Architects

7 First Step: Identify the problem to be solved Robotics: Design and program a robot to follow a black line for 30 seconds, pickup an object, swing turn, and follow black line to the beginning of a line.

8 Second Step Research possible solutions to the problem Robotics: Research online how robots are used in manufacturing, how do they follow a line throughout the factory, what does their robots look like that pickup or move objects.

9 Third Step Brainstorm with other professionals on possible solutions Collaborate: With me, with other students, and even others outside the classroom that might help your design.

10 Fourth Step Choose the best solution, give a reason, consider the resources Know the specifications or requirements Design and program a robot to follow a black line for 5 seconds, pickup an object, swing turn, and follow black line to the beginning of a line. Consider constraints or limits You will have until 10/17/17 to design your robot and it must perform all tasks and meet all specifications.

11 Fifth Step Build a model or prototype (test model) Engineers must determine how good the product is and how it is part of a solution

12 Sixth Step Test the solution Test your robot design, how does the arm and sensors perform, can you meet the requirements more efficiently??

13 Seventh Step Communicate with other people your solution, the test results, and how it solved the problem Communicate with me, with others in the classroom, other teacher, parents, etc. Brainstorming with others helps when problem solving.

14 Eighth Step Redesign if necessary, make changes as needed Engineers modify and create technology that improves human life. Create, modify, collaborate, and design your robot using the design process.

15 How will you get a grade:
Starting today 10/16/2017 create a log of what you did each day, begin with step one of the design process. Describe the problem according to this slide presentation. Turn in your completed log next week when we demonstrate our robot designs.
