What am I learning? What is the effect of rhetoric and persuasion? How do authors express ideas in texts? What am going to do? Learn and implement new vocabulary and concepts. 4 From Claim to Thesis Thesis is a statement that will contain your claim but is more specific about what you intend to argue. You will use the article to make a thesis with a claim that states your position about the following: A person that has made poor personal choices should be able to run for public office because… Or A person that has made poor personal choices should NOT be able to run for public office because... Make sure you include at least one evidence from the article that supports your claim.

13 Group task: Writing a short speech (3-4 paragraphs)
Dropout Alexa — Your friend Alexa has lost interest in school and her grades are suffering. As a result, she'll be repeating 11th grade. Alexa has decided to quit and work more hours as a waitress to support herself. She says she'll eventually get her diploma on her own. Compose a logical argument convincing Alexa to stay in school, with reasons why it is to her benefit.

14 Group task: Writing a short speech (3-4 paragraphs)
Many schools in California have changed their school calendar so that they are now year-round schools. They still have time off in the summer, but they don't have the traditional 2-month break. Some Georgia schools are considering following in California's footsteps. Compose an argument either in support of the year-round school calendar or in support of continuing the traditional school calendar.

Compose, examine, and evaluate texts for persuasive techniques and rhetorical appeals. How will I show I learned it? I will implement my knowledge of rhetorical appeals and skills of persuasion to compose a short persuasive speech collaboratively. February 16 Vocabulary practice (5 min) Rhetorical appeals and SOAPST review Write a persuasive speech. REMINDERS: Vocabulary Quiz is Tomorrow! Grammar is due tomorrow. We are going to 2048 lab tomorrow.
