1 Macromolecules/ Properties of water
By: Mahek, Angela, & Chino

2 Definitions: Covalent bond- chemical bond formed when two atoms share one or more pairs of electrons. Ionic bond- forms through the electrical force between oppositely charged ions. Hydrogen bond- Attraction between a slightly positive hydrogen atom and a slightly negative atom. Valence electrons- electrons on the outer shell of an atom.

3 Definitions cont.: Cohesion: Attraction between molecules of the same substance. Adhesion: Attraction molecules of different substances. Polar molecule: Molecule that is positive and negative. (Think of a magnet) Amino Acid- Molecule that makes up proteins. Composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur.

4 Monosaccharide: simplest carbohydrates and are often called single sugars.
Polysaccharide: polymers of monosaccharides. Glycerol: Includes fat and oils and is bonded to molecules called fatty acids. Fatty acids- Chains of carbon atoms bonded to hydrogens atoms.

5 Nucleotide: Monomer that forms DNA and has a phosphate group, a sugar, and a nitrogen containing base. Polypeptide: Chains of amino acids. Proteins are made up of one or more polypeptide molecules. Catalyst: Substance that decreases activation energy and increases reaction rate in a chemical reaction. Activation Energy: Energy input necessary to initiate a chemical reaction.

6 Video Watch a fantastic video:

7 How to remember Bonds: Challenge: Draw a covalent Bond and an ionic bond.

8 Challenge: Show what valence electrons are.

9 See Chinos performance on Cohesion & Adhesion.
What is consisted of glycerol that are bonded to molecules called fatty acids? - Fats and Oils

10 Draw a polymer and label a monomer.
Mahek draws a beautiful image of the answer. Trick: Poly- many Mono-one
