VOCABULARY RIVET
2
Visible Light Visible light includes all the wavelengths of light the human eye can detect.
3
__ __ __ __ __
4
Sight The power of seeing.
5
Reflection of light: regular and diffuse
Regular: When parallel rays of light hit a smooth surface. Diffuse: When parallel rays of light hit a bumpy or uneven surface.
6
Refraction of Light The bending of light as it passes through mediums (solids, liquids, gases).
7
Electromagnetic spectrum
The range of all types of electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic radiation: energy that can travel through space in the form of waves.
8
Clear materials- transmit light.
Transparent Clear materials- transmit light.
9
Translucent See through materials- scatters the transmitted light.
10
Opaque Material you can not see through- absorbs and reflects.
11
Law of reflection Angle made from incoming wave = the angle made from reflected wave.
12
Lens Curved glass or transparent material that refracts light.
13
Convex lens Thicker in the center than the edges (bends light in).
14
Concave lens Thinner in the center than the edges (bends light out).
15
Focus Point The point at which rays or waves meet after reflection or refraction, or the point from which diverging rays or waves appear to proceed.
16
Internal Reflection The phenomenon which occurs when a propagated wave strikes a medium boundary at an angle larger than a particular critical angle with respect to the normal to the surface.
17
Optical Fiber A thin flexible fiber with a glass core through which light signals can be sent with very little loss of strength.
