1 Charles Manson dies

2 Charles Manson, the cult leader whose followers committed heinous murders that terrorized Los Angeles and shocked the nation, died Sunday of natural causes. He died in prison under the control of the California Department of Corrections. He was 83. The charismatic and cruel Manson orchestrated a wave of violence in August 1969 that took the lives of seven people, swept up the headlines worldwide and landed him and his "Manson Family" of followers in prison for most of the remainder of their lives. Manson served nine life terms in California prisons and was denied parole 12 times. His notoriety, boosted by popular books and films, made him a cult figure to those fascinated by his dark apocalyptic visions. Although Manson ordered the killings, he didn't participate. Over the course of two nights, the killers took the lives of seven people, inflicting 169 stab wounds and seven .22-caliber gunshot wounds. Both crime scenes revealed horrifying details. Manson was originally sentenced to death but the death penalty was abolished in the state and his sentence was commuted to life in prison.

3 In Other News Protesters gathered outside the Libyan Embassy in France following an investigation into migrant auctions in Libya that shows slave auctions taking place. During the investigation, people witnessed a dozen men being sold at an auction outside of the Libyan capital of Tripoli. Some of them were auctioned off for as little as $400. The auctions were ultimately taking place at nine locations throughout Libya, but many more are believed to take place each month. Tens of thousands fleeing conflict or searching for economic opportunity cross into Libya each year, looking to be smuggled across the Mediterranean Sea. Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has still not resigned, even after a week of political turmoil that ended with his own party calling for him to step down over the weekend and giving a deadline to resign. But that deadline has come and gone, and on Sunday night, Mugabe made a rambling TV address that did not end in his resignation. Mugabe has been in power for 37 years, and several groups seem content -- if not overjoyed -- that the controversial 93-year-old leader may soon be forced to step down. His own military is currently in control of the government, citizens are marching in the streets calling for him to resign. Efforts to locate an Argentine submarine that has been missing since last week have been ramped up dramatically by a multinational search team of boats and planes. Ships and aircraft from at least seven countries (including the United States) are scouring the southern Atlantic for the submarine ARA San Juan, which was last seen Wednesday. There are 44 submariners on board. If it has sunk but is still intact, they will have about a week to 10 days of oxygen.
