1 Settling the Great Basin
Chapter 7

2 Today we will learn… History Objective – We will describe the tasks and events the pioneers faced when they began to settle the Salt Lake Valley. Behavior Objective – Work Ethic: We will stay on task and listen for important information. Language Objective – We will read for important details and write what we learn in the form of a newspaper article.

3 Features Our Articles Will Have
1 – Headline: A title that grabs the readers attention. Dramatic!! 2 – By line: Records the name of the journalist/author. 3 – Article text: The body of the article summarizes what happed, who was involved, when and where it took place, and why it happened. 4 – Quotes: Journalists often include quotes from witnesses. “I saw it happen!” 5 – Pictures/Charts/Graphs/Maps: Pictures are used to grab the readers’ interest. Charts/Graphs/Maps are used to explain particular details of the story.

4 The Deseret News The first issue of the Deseret News was published June 15, 1850, and was 8 pages long.  We are going to pretend that we are journalists writing for this newspaper. Our job is to find the most interesting news story in the past three years ( ) to write about.

5 Start Your Fact Finding
Pretend that you are a journalist (reporter) who went to Utah between to learn more about the Mormon communities in the Great Basin. Your assignment is to find the most interesting story for your newspaper, research it, and write an article about it. Today you will be fact finding. Read pages (?s 1-12) and (?s 21-31), taking note of five interesting stories and/or important events. You can also answer questions on your study guide as you do your “fact finding”!

6 Possible Stories Choose a subject to write an article about, then write down what pages it can be found on. The Mormons settle in the Great Basin p The First Winter & Crickets and Seagulls p Gold Rush in California! p Mormon Immigrants travel to Utah p Utah becomes a Territory p Handcarts to the West p Go to the page in the book with that story on it and write down the following information:

7 Deseret News On the back of your lined paper, mark which story you plan to write about then write 10 facts about the event that answer these types of questions. (Note – it could take more than one sentence to adequately answer these questions!!!) Who was involved in the event? (Could be different groups or individuals.) What happened? When did it happen? Where did it happen?, Why did it happen?/ Why is it an important event? Quotes: Find 1-2 quotes from an eyewitness. Write it down as #11 on your paper. (Always include the name of the person who said it or a description of the person!!)

8 Deseret News Quotes! Go back to the quote you found in the textbook. Make sure it is an accurate, complete and mistake free copy. Next to it, write down the name of the person who said/wrote the quote. You will need this information for your story!! Take 5 minutes to finish your 10 facts from the book. You will not be able to use the book again after this, so work quickly.

9 Deseret News Advanced research:
Now you will read a new article about your topic. You will write 10 notes about things you learned from this article that were not in your book! Who was involved in the event? (Could be different groups or individuals.) What happened? When did it happen? Where did it happen?, Why is it an important event? Quotes: Find 1-2 more quotes from eyewitnesses. Write it accurately with the name of the person who said it.

10 Reminder: Features of an Article
1 – Headline: A title that grabs the readers attention. Dramatic!! 2 – By line: Records the name of the journalist/author. 3 – Article text: The body of the article summarizes what happed, who was involved, when and where it took place, and (sometimes) why it is newsworthy. 4 – Quotes: Journalists often include quotes from witnesses. “I saw it happen!” 5 – Pictures/Charts/Graphs/Maps: Pictures are used to grab the readers’ interest. Charts/Graphs/Maps are used to explain particular details of the story.

11 Tips for writing a successful article!

12 Arrange your information
Decide which facts are the most important for your readers to know. They should answer the 5 ‘w’ questions (who, what, when, where, why) in the first paragraph or two. Information that is useful, but not critical, should be in the middle of your article. Background information. Personal stories from witnesses. Interesting details or other information should go at the end.

16 Deseret News When you have completed this, look at the organizer for your article and write your rough draft. Remember that newspaper articles need to be interesting, a bit dramatic (to catch their readers attention), and to give the facts about the event. Try to be unbiased (Don’t take sides!) in your writing. Don’t copy the book!!! (That would result in a Z and a redo for you!)

17 Finishing the Article Look at your Deseret News papers (notes and final draft). Read your newspaper story. Does it make sense? Would it have all the facts it needs for someone else who doesn’t know the story to understand it? What does it still need?
