1 Kindergarten Student Entrance Profile
Raquel Rose, MCOE Assistant Superintendent Melissa Guerrero, MCOE Special Projects September 20, 2017 Spring our office was approached about interest in implementing a universal tool across the county Agree with the notion – but also recognize sites are currently implementing a tool – so why this? Research based – aligns with potential state mandated assessment – DRDP – K Began the journey or research

2 Background Developed & evaluated over eight years as part of a school, community, and university action research collaboration 13-item screening tool designed to assess a child’s school readiness through observational ratings Ratings include 6 social-emotional and 7 school-ready knowledge items Collaboration involved the First 5 Commission of Santa Barbara County, school districts, and the Center for School-Based Youth Development at the University of California Santa Barbara Tool is intended as a universal screening option that may identify children at increased levels of risk and their school readiness – It ultimately helps teachers understand which students may need to receive more careful observation/monitoring or a more intense diagnostic tool Sonoma Tool – has a parent component and has 6 school-ready items (alphabet naming) not 7 items

3 Project Proposal Recruit 5-10 local kindergarten teachers to study and pilot the tool Obtain constructive feedback on the usability of the tool Provide opportunity for the County to gather meaningful data about the readiness of Kindergarten students as they enter the K- 12 system Analyze the KSEP feedback and plan action steps related to the universal implementation – if feasible Prior to moving forward a countywide adoption of implementing the KSEP we’d like to beta-test implementation with volunteer teachers

4 Project Activities & Budget
Training Tool Implementation Data Collection/Input Culminating interviews and discussions regarding the tool Provide executive summary of pilot project outcome BUDGET MCOE Staff Teacher stipend/sub costs Materials & Supplies Contracts – trainers, database, etc. Request for $44,411 – up to $50,000

5 Why do this….. Possibilities Challenges
Why change what we are already doing? Time intensive Is this giving us anything we don’t already have? Provides a single countywide metric Guides direction of more resources and ability to track their impact Provides partnership initiative with a collective impact for the most at-risk youth Allows teachers to understand which students are at-risk and need increased diagnostic monitoring
