(B) Orientation preference is mapped smoothly in ferret visual cortex but is heterogeneous in regions such as pinwheel centers (dashed line), which like mouse V1 contain neurons with a broad range of selectivities. (C) Nonspecific connectivity from excitatory to inhibitory neurons predicts weak orientation selectivity in mouse V1 and heterogeneous regions of ferret V1. (D and E) Specific connectivity (D) or specific synaptic weights (E) can give rise to selective interneuron responses in regions with heterogeneous excitatory cell tuning.
