4 The Basic Principles The Basic Principles provide a set of behaviors for putting shared values into practice to develop a strong network of relationships at every level. Focus on the situation, issue, or behaviour, not on the person. Maintain the self-confidence and self-esteem of others. Maintain constructive relationships. Take initiative to make things better. Lead by example. Think beyond the moment. As leaders we need to know how BP can help you lead and manage:: Will help you solve problems more efficiently, make better decisions and avoid emotional outbursts Contributing fully is easier in an environment where people can express themselves without fear or judgment. Getting things accomplished depends of a diverse network of trusted colleagues. Those who are willing to help generate new thinking & solutions To gain credibility and trust you must be willing to demonstrate your readiness to take risk for the greater purpose, risk failure, own your mistakes You are setting the standard for behaviours, actions, and attitudes Consider the impact beyond today and beyond yourself. Set compelling goals, make thoughtful plans and behave ethically. Academic Leadership Orientation 2017

5 Principles of Inclusivity
History of the Principles In 2009 UW formed a committee from across our campus to discuss the diverse needs of our UW community. To acknowledge, communicate and promote an understanding of the complexity and uniqueness of the campus community, the committee established the POI presenting ideals by which the campus members should engage one another with sensitivity, respect and fairness. POI encourages best practices through awareness of inclusivity. To make sure every principle was brought to life – a workshop addressing a particular aspect of Inclusivity was created. Silver Award winning program in Nationally and also presented at several Canadian and US univeristy conferences. Academic Leadership Orientation 2017

6 Principles of Inclusivity
Acknowledge individuals have unique and particular needs in the learning and work environment. Respect each individual’s right to express and present themselves relative to their religion, culture, ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical and mental ability. Promote inclusivity by reasonably adjusting procedures, activities and physical environments. Focus on the capability of the individual without assumptions or labels. Be inclusive in all forms of communication. Serve all with sensitivity, respect and fairness. To make sure every principle was brought to life – a workshop addressing a particular aspect of Inclusivity was created. WE see these workshops as development NOT training, in other words every workshop builds in a practical hands on process to demonstrate and apply the skills acquired everyday in the workplace and in daily life.
