By 1867… Confederation is on the horizon
People of African descent had a presence in almost all regions of the soon to be born country Who were they??? (Keep in mind the population may be DESCENDANTS of these groups) Free blacks, Black Loyalists, Jamaican Maroons (very few), Black Refugees, escaped slaves Settlers in the West (from OK, California)

Racism north of the border?
Despite the abolition of slavery happening in 1833 in this area….there still was… Klu Klux Klan presence Social customs often led to segregation & unfair treatment of people of African descent Fear that what was happening in the US would “trickle up” North of the border
